Retirement payouts in Japan

what a career at one employer pays out at the end

Japanese employers typically pay a lump sum on leaving, sized by years of service. It is not a pension — it is paid once, and the amount depends on how long you stayed and why you left. These are the national averages.

35 years, all sizes
¥24.2m
retiring at mandatory retirement age
20 years
¥6.6m
same basis, shorter service
Large employers
¥29.5m
1,000+ employees, 35 years
Small employers
¥14.5m
50–99 employees, 35 years

Retiring at the mandatory retirement age

Average payout (lump sum plus the present value of any corporate pension), by employer size and years of service.

Company size20 yrs25 yrs30 yrs35 yrs
All sizes¥6.6m¥10.6m¥13.6m¥24.2m
1,000+ employees¥9.3m¥14.6m¥17.7m¥29.5m
500–999¥7.3m¥10.5m¥14.8m¥21.4m
100–499¥6.1m¥8.2m¥11.1m¥14.1m
50–99¥4.8m¥8.0m¥8.1m¥14.5m

Large employers pay about 2.0× what the smallest ones do at 35 years of service. Years of service matter more than anything else — the schedules are steeply back-loaded, so leaving at 20 years pays far less than half of what 35 years does.

Employer-initiated separation

When the employer ends the relationship — restructuring, early-retirement programmes — payouts are higher than voluntary departure at the same service length.

Company size20 yrs25 yrs30 yrs35 yrs
All sizes¥9.7m¥19.3m¥28.2m¥27.8m
1,000+ employees¥14.4m¥20.7m¥31.4m¥30.0m
500–999¥8.3m¥16.1m¥17.9m¥20.4m
100–499¥6.8m¥14.2m¥14.6m¥18.2m
50–99¥10.4m¥22.7m¥22.4m

This is the reason Japanese restructuring is often announced as a "voluntary" early-retirement scheme with an enhanced payout: the enhancement is what persuades people to take it.
